Entry 2: PETA's Plan
For those of you who don't know what PETA is they are an animal rights organization. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. You can visit their website here.
PETA has taken a stand against selling cow milk and instead would rather people drink human breast milk. Now read that again carefully and let it sink in to your mind. They literally called up Ben & Jerry's and are trying to swap cows out of the milking machines and put people in there instead. I'm all for being fair towards animals, but there is a stark difference between animals, people and the rights of both. Torturing or starving animals isn't right, I don't hit dogs, squish birds or kick cats (though the occasional prank on a cat is in order for laughter) but this is just a silly stance on our grocery milk.
I grew up on a small farm and most of my family is adept in farming life and farming knowledge. Based on said knowledge I would venture to say PETA hasn't done their research completely. A typical dairy cow (female, obviously) is bred then their calf is weened off their milk in a couple of days. Males lead an excellent life being a meat cow while the females grow up to be additional milking cows. After the adult cows who were bred have their calves weened they continue to be milked. You can keep a cow producing that milk for after their pregnancy if you keep milking them, for years sometimes. The quicker a calf can get off mothers milk means a stronger cow or bull. (Bulls are males) If you do NOT milk the cow, it is very painful and will kill the animal.
By milking the cow we are doing it a favor and in return we are providing ourselves with milk. It's been this way for only a ba-zillion years, so personally, I don't see any good reason to stop it now. The cow wins, we win, my Oreos win, but apparently PETA thinks differently. In my experience, taking an extreme stance in either direction either makes you look like a fool or is a waste of energy. If it's any measurement of credibility PETA conveniently found a link between autism and dairy milk too recently. I bet I can form a study to find a link between PETA and autism as well.
