Entry 9: Economy Meltdown
I bet everyone's heard of the doom and gloom of the financial meltdown that's going on. From what I'm told (by people smarter and older than me) this really a big deal as the United States is something of the corner stone of the world's market. The euro is rapidly in worth, large corporations are falling, people are losing jobs, businesses are closing their doors, people are losing their retirement funds. It's the end of the modern world as we know it! However, I still see people's obnoxious Hummers driving to and fro. I still see people waiting in line at at over priced clothes stores for their jeans. I also still see advertising like their is no tomorrow for next years full efficient car or the latest video game.
Yeah, I'm sure we're in a pickle and times are/will be hard, but I thought being in an economy that's "worse then the great depression" would be utter agony. I have a few theories:
1. Going under isn't as bad as we thought it would be.
I don't quite understand what happens when a country's economy goes belly up. Do we sink into the ocean? Do we lose? Do we fly off into space where other failed countries are? I've not gotten a clear answer other then "it's bad".
2. Going under is 100x as bad as we thought it would be.
It's so terrible I don't even know. It's like my hand was in the fire too long and I can't feel it anymore. The world has crash and burned everywhere I can see. People are still in shock and we won't get a real grasp on what's happened for some time until the glaze over our eyes wears off.
3. People are idiots.
I suppose the fact could be that the situation is indeed dire but people are too stubborn to get out of old habit and conserve or just are oblivious to what is going on so they continue with their daily lives.
Anyone know what's actually going to happen?
